A Fat Duck with a fat bill

I’ve been asking everyone if they had been to the Fat Duck before as I’m trying to gauge how much it would be. Everyone is excited about the Fat Duck’s first international venture and out of all the destinations, it will make its home in Melbourne for only a short 6 months before turning into Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. If I was lucky enough to make a booking, how many would I book for? Just for two knowing TimmyC and I are reliable? Or do I book for 4-6 and see who wants to come with me? Well the price would play a big factor and hence my question. How much is it to eat at the Fat Duck?

I’ve done the Maths. According to The Fat Duck website, current prices are £195 per person with an optional 12.5% service charge on top of that. After September 2014, prices will be upped to £220 per person and with the addition of the 12.5%, it comes to £247.50 which is the equivalent of $448.98 based on today’s currency exchange rate assuming that the prices stay fixed. Will it be worth it do you think?

Here is what they’ve said about bookings on their website:

AUSTRALIA 2015

In February 2015 The Fat Duck will relocate for a six month period to the Crown Resort in Melbourne, Australia. At this time no decisions have been made about the release of reservations for Australia.

An announcement will be made later in the year and we will provide plenty of notice as to when and how the dates will be released.

  1. It’s so tempting but that is SOOOOOOOOO much money that could be better spent on eating at lots of other places or going to Ricardo’s cafe or Flute Bakery multiple times.

The hardest part is getting the reservation. Not choosing if it’s worth it. Fat duck can take like 200 reservations a day (for a date months in advance) and can get 20,000 phone calls. I’d say use the pirates code. Take what you can, give nothing back.

  3. The system they have in the UK works well. You can only book online on a rolling 2 month basis subject to availability. If you are unable to secure the date/time you want you may go on a wait list. I tried daily without success for six weeks to secure a booking for a party of 3 people (one of them being my sister who was visiting from Australia). However, last week I was contacted by the reservation team by email and telephone advising me a table had become available for Tuesday 8th July at 7am pm. Needless to say, I confirmed the reservation immediately, which involved full pre payment with a credit card in case of a ‘no show’. So please do not give up trying to secure a reservation.

Myself and guests look forward to a unique gastro experience, and commend the marketing and management staff at the Fat Duck for having a reservation system that is transparent and fair for all prospect diners.

I believe the pricing enables the correct amount of staff i.e. chefs, waitress/waiters sommeliers and developmental staff etc. to be employed to give the diner a very unique experience.

Wishing you all good health, good luck and happy dinning, wherever it may be Xxxx

      1. Hi
You may fined that the only way you can do it is via the internet on the restaurants online booking system. Do email them if there is a special occasion as well and I think it helps if give them your mobile (cell) phone and home contact details so they can make contact with you asap in the event of a cancelation. It may help if you have others also try to make bookings on your behalf.

Wishing you much luck with your reservation and hope you have a fab experience.
